The New Zealand Government has announced important changes to the Parent Resident Visa category, with a new hybrid selection model taking effect from 5th October 2026. These changes are designed to make the process fairer and more predictable for families, while still offering opportunities for newer applicants.
What’s Changing?
- New Hybrid Selection Model From 5th October, Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will be selected using a combination of:
- 90% selected in date order (longest‑waiting EOIs first)
- 10% selected through a random ballot
The annual cap of 2,500 Parent Resident Visas remains unchanged.
This approach gives greater certainty to families who have been waiting the longest, while still allowing newer EOIs a chance to be selected earlier.
- Current EOI Holders Don’t Need to Do Anything
If your EOI expires on or after 5 October 2026, it will automatically transition into the new system. INZ will release information about queue positions once the new model is live.
People who have continuously maintained an EOI — including those who submitted a replacement within 90 days of expiry — will generally keep their original queue date.
- EOIs Will No Longer Expire
Under the new model, EOIs will not expire, provided applicants:
- confirm every 2 years that they wish to remain in the pool, and
- keep their information up to date.
There is no additional fee for this confirmation.
- Visa Requirements Remain the Same
The changes affect how EOIs are selected, not the underlying eligibility criteria. Sponsors and applicants must still meet all existing Parent Resident Visa requirements.
- Selection Dates
- 11 August 2026 – final selection under current settings
- 10 November 2026 – first selection under the new hybrid model

The Parent Resident Visa plays an important role in helping New Zealanders bring their parents closer for support, connection and stability. While demand continues to exceed available places, the new model aims to make the process more transparent and predictable.
