Immigration New Zealand has announced a new Business Investor Work Visa, replacing the Entrepreneur Work Visa. This visa is designed to attract experienced investors who will actively run businesses and help grow New Zealand’s economy.
Visa options
- $1 million investment in an existing business – 3-year work-to-residence pathway
- $2 million investment in an existing business – 12-month fast-track to residence
Applicants may purchase a business outright or acquire at least 25% ownership (meeting the minimum investment thresholds). Successful applicants can include their partner and dependent children.
Key eligibility requirements
- Investment of at least NZD $1m or $2m
- At least NZD $500,000 available for living costs
- Aged 55 or under
- IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent)
- Relevant business experience
- Health and character requirements
- The business must employ at least 5 full-time equivalent staff
Important exclusions: Certain types of businesses – such as gambling, drop-shipping, tobacco, adult entertainment, fast food, franchised businesses, convenience stores, and home-based businesses – will not qualify.
Visa details
- Granted for up to 4 years
- Application cost: NZD $12,380 (includes fees and levy)
- Both pathways lead to eligibility for the Business Investor Resident Visa
This new category complements the Active Investor Plus Visa and forms part of the government’s refreshed business immigration settings.
The Entrepreneur Work Visa is now closed to new applicants, though current holders can still apply for residence or renew their visa if required.
