These updates include a new Skilled Work Experience pathway for experienced workers without formal qualifications, as well as shorter residence timelines for those applying under the existing 6 point SMC system.
This article brings together the key details that have been shared so far.
1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway for Experienced Workers
From August 2026, migrants with extensive experience but limited or no academic qualifications will have a dedicated residence option.
Who this pathway is designed for
Migrants who:
- Work in ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 roles
- Have 5 years of relevant experience
- Have at least 2 of those years in New Zealand
- Earn at least 1.1 times the median wage
This pathway recognises the value of practical, hands‑on experience and provides a realistic route to residence for skilled workers who may not meet qualification based points thresholds.
Amber and Red Lists
Amber List occupations These roles have stricter requirements:
- 1.2 times the median wage
- All 5 years of experience must be in New Zealand
Red List occupations These roles are not eligible for the Skilled Work Experience pathway. Examples include:
- Hairdressers
- Retail managers
- Beauty and massage therapists
Migrants in Red List roles may still qualify under the 6 point SMC pathway, but not through the new experience based route.
2. Faster Residence Under the Existing 6 Point SMC Pathway
INZ is also reducing the amount of skilled New Zealand work experience required for many applicants who qualify through points. This will make residence more achievable for migrants with recognised qualifications or higher earnings.
Examples for qualification based applicants
| Qualification | Current NZ work experience needed | From August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Overseas Bachelor Degree (3 points) | 3 years | 2 years |
| Bachelor Degree with Honours (4 points) | 2 years | 1.5 years |
Examples for high earners
| Earnings | Current NZ work experience needed | From August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 times median wage (3 points) | 3 years | 2 years |
| 2 times median wage (4 points) | 2 years | 1.5 years |
These reductions mean many migrants will reach the 6 point threshold significantly sooner than under current settings.
3. Why These Changes Matter
More inclusive pathways
Migrants who previously struggled to meet qualification based requirements, especially those in trades and technical roles, will now have a clearer and more achievable route to residence.
Greater certainty for employers
Employers will be better able to retain experienced staff who are already contributing to New Zealand’s workforce.
Faster residence for many applicants
Shorter work experience timelines under the 6 point SMC pathway mean quicker access to residence for degree qualified migrants, high earners and skilled workers progressing through New Zealand’s labour market.
A more balanced system
With the Trades and Technicians pathway, the Skilled Work Experience pathway and the refined 6 point SMC settings, the system now offers:
- A qualification based route
- An experience based route
- A dedicated pathway for trades and technicians
This creates a more flexible and realistic framework for a wide range of skilled migrants.
